While it may have just 35 touring pitches, each is set in its own little private pitch, giving the campsite a personal and intimate feel. The lack of screaming kids and tranquil setting mean that it’s a real winner for those seeking to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. It’s within 800 yards of a championship fishing lake and close to Bath, Bristol and Weston-Super-Mare, plus the scenic Mendip Hills. With a pub and shop only a few hundred yards in the village, it’s a winner.
After reviewing several 300-pitch campsites prior to our visit, driving onto the friendly and pretty Bath Chew Valley campsite came as a welcome relief. No screaming kids, no neon-lit disco and no noisy road or train track nearby. Instead you’re presented with an oasis of calm set in one of the prettier parts of the world.
Inside, the entry-barrier access site, there’s a large gravelled car park in which to leave your car after you’ve sited your caravan – this aims to limit vehicle movement at night (although this obviously doesn’t apply to motorhome owners). The site itself consists of a gravelled driveway running around a square-shaped field, with hard-standing and grassed pitches to both sides of the driveway.
All 35 pitches have 16 amp electrical hook-up and are on hardstandings, with 25 of them currently being fully serviced. Lots of trees, bushes, shrubs and all manner of floral displays help break up the site. The thoughtful planting makes each pitch quite private and secluded, so for those seeking tranquil privacy it doesn’t get much better. It’s little wonder that it was awarded a David Bellamy Gold Award for conservation.
In 2006 they also set aside an acre of woodland, next to a dog-walking area. The campsite is dog-friendly, but your pooch will need to be kept on a lead at all times. Opposite the entrance and car park is the reception area and heated toilet block, which has been fully refurbished and features private cubicles and showers (their luxury hotel style unit received five stars in the 2006 Loo of the Year awards).
In 2009, the owners developed an adjacent field which added 10 new full service pitches (including fresh water, a drain and grey water point, 16amp electric hook-up and a TV point). They also added two new private bathrooms.
There’s also a utility room with a freezer, sinks, spin dryer and ironing facilities. Although the site itself doesn’t do food or have a shop, the village of Bishop Sutton is just 200 yards away and not only has various village shops but also a couple of pubs – The Butchers Arms and The Red Lion. Also nearby is a championship fishing lake that should keep anglers amused, while the towns of Bristol and Bath are both just a short drive away. Scenery lovers will also enjoy the site's setting close to the Mendip Hills and Cheddar Gorge. If you’re looking for a campsite that allows you to escape from the hustle and bustle, and get a good night's sleep, then this could well be the place for you.
