Avoid standing out like a clueless tourist by following the advice from TripTogether, the  service for connecting travellers and finding travel companions. TripTogether has compiled a list of tips for how to avoid acting like a typical tourist and experience destinations like the locals do. “Many members have expressed a desire to live life like a local, even when they’re traveling, so we polled members around the globe to help meet this desire,” said Anthony Volpe, TripTogether’s main spokesman.

While there are limitations on where you can park your motorhome, and they don’t really blend in, it’s possible to shop at the local stores and cook the local food. You’ll find yourself connecting with the local culture in a way that simply isn’t possible if you stay in a hotel in the city centre and eat at restaurants catering to tourists.

Another great way to blend in is to contact one of the locals before you travel there which is where TripTogether comes in. When you have a cool companion showing you around all the hidden places, you’ll feel like you’re a part of the city and enjoy it much more. Guide books are written by people who spend a week or two at most in a city, and often point you towards destinations that will be mobbed by other tourists. Let a local show you where the best cafes and sights are and you will create awesome memories.

Check message boards and the newspaper for events in the city you’re going to. Everyone knows about the famous festivals, but what about a cool art exhibition or music performance? That’s where you’ll find the local people. Meet new people there and you’ll be a cool traveler, rather than a typical tourist.
