Suffolk touring park plans grind to halt

No go for touring in country park

St Edmundsbury Borough Council’s plans for a large touring campsite in the West Stow Country Park has run into trouble. The plans included 30 motorhome and caravan pitches plus space for up to 150 tents without the country park. The council was trying to maximise use of the site and drive more traffic to the visitor centre, café and West Stow Anglo Saxon village/museum. However, James Meyer, conservation planner for Suffolk Wildlife Trust,  questioned the council’s ecological appraisal that stated the cam would have no likely significant effect on the surrounding areas. The park has the Breckland Special Protection Area and Breckland Forest Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) on three sides and is close to the West Stow Heath SSSI and Lackford Lakes SSSI.

Natural England has also raised objections to the plans by challenging the council’s conclusion that the site would not have a significant effects on the Breckland SPA. More concerns have been registered by the charity Perennial which owns Fullers Mill Garden and Bernard Tickner who created the garden there. The council is now reviewing the objections to check whether an Environment Impact Assessment is required before progressing further. No date on any decision has been set.
