Fiat emissions ahead of Euro VI arrival

Professor Paolo Fiamma, at the university of Pisa, has carried out a study into the environmental impact of motorhoming verses travelling by car and staying in hotels.
This was real-world research using, in part, an example of a group of four friends travelling for 15 days in Italy, from Milan to Perugia (a distance of 600km) in an overcab coachbuilt. The result was a reduction in CO2 emissions of 52% over car travel with hotel stays. Switch to a low-profile and the figure rises to 57%.On the road diesels do well with reasonably good CO2 emissions, although the presented facts skip lightly past the other serious pollutants produced. The real aim of the research, especially as Fiat was heavily involved and suggests that the Ducato-based motorhome is the best for the job, was to promote the green image of our hobby and so encourage governments, local authorities and tourist organisations to welcome and provide facilities for all things motorhoming.
The Fiat Ducato and Euro VI rumor mill is working overtime at present, trying to discover exactly what and when Fiat is going to do to make its Ducato range Euro VI compliant. Euro VI is the latest emissions standard and many vehicle makes have used the chemical AdBlue. AdBlue is a brand name, but one that’s becoming generic, for Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) a liquid that’s injected into the exhaust of engines when running to remove even more dirty emissions and thus make the Euro VI grade.
Engines play a part too as some may be too old a design and not be worth upgrading to meet the new standard. Rumors circulating around Fiat’s forthcoming Euro VI engines include suggestions that the Ducato will achieve Euro VI without using AdBlue and that the most powerful motor, 3.0-litre, 180bhp, is going to be dropped from the range.
Production of Euro VI is reputed to start in June 2016, with deliveries beginning in September of the same year. It also seems that aside from upgrading to Euro VI, there are no other plans for a new Ducato in the short term. All the action takes place with the smaller light commercials. A new Fiat Doblo has already been launched this year, with Scudo and Fiorino due in 2016. All three sit firmly in the small microcamper market, built by the likes of Wheelhome and others.
Citroen is already planning to introduce new Euro VI engines.
