Bailey launches new entry-level motorhome range

Bailey of Bristol has unveiled its new Approach Advance motorhome range, with prices starting from £38,515 on the road for the Advance 615.

The four-model, all low-profile line-up will sit below Bailey's existing Approach Autograph range and take on the Elddis Autoquest and Swift Escape in the budget coachbuilt sector.

The introduction of the Advance range comes a little over three years since Bailey entered the motorhome market. The manufacturer said the launch was actually delayed by the success of the Autograph models, which are now being produced at the rate of 800 vehicles a year.

With the addition of this new Advance range, Bailey anticipates that motorhomes will account for a third of the company’s turnover.

Like the Autographs, the Advance motorhomes are based on a Peugeot Boxer cab (in white instead of black) with 130bhp Euro V engine.

However, the use of an ultra-low Al-Ko AMC chassis is a unique selling point at this price level.

The top of the new range – the Advance 665 – is listed at £40,795 OTR which includes delivery to a dealer, numberplates, 12 months' vehicle excise duty and first registration free.

Inside the Advance 615Despite prices that are around £5-6,000 lower than the equivalent Autograph model, Bailey is keen to point out that the new Advance range is built to the same standards, using the same Alu-Tech construction with the same panel thicknesses and retaining features such as the underfloor battery boxes.

On models with rear travel seats, the same seat construction and reinforced bulkheads are used, incorporating all the features developed from Bailey’s series of crashtests.

Positive locking cupboard catches are a further safety feature, while all fridges are securely bolted through the floor.

FOUR-MODEL RANGE

The four-model range starts with the six-metre Advance 615, a two-berth vehicle with front half-dinette, centre kitchen and washroom and a rear lounge.

The 635 model introduces a new layout for Bailey, with long parallel settees (acting as instant single beds) up front, while the bathroom features a large separate shower and stretches across the full width of the vehicle.

The 640 has a fixed bed layout, inspired by the popular Autograph 740, with a French bed aft (with washroom alongside) and side-facing settees up front. It offers four berths but only two travel seats.

Finally, tThe kitchen in the Bailey Advance 665he 665 is a full six-berth with six belted travel seats and a layout close in concept to that of the 2014 Family Motorhome of the Year, the Autograph 765.

However, the Advance 665 has a different kitchen configuration and a smaller washroom as a result of its shorter 6.96m overall length. It retains the pullman dinette up front (with electric drop-down bed above), as well as the rear U-shaped lounge. All Advance models are 2.15m wide (excluding mirrors).

Standard spec in the Bailey Advance starts with air-conditioning, a DAB radio with Bluetooth and a Remis windscreen blind in the cab and extends to a chassis prepared for towbar fitment, Grade III classification for the heating and insulation and timber-free body panel construction.

Exterior features continue with Mini and Midi Heki rooflights, externally accessed storage lockers on 635 and 640, outside 230V socket, Vision Plus satellite connection and fixing points for a bike rack.

Inside, new Mendip Ash furniture is mated to Pimlico soft furnishings with matching scatter cushions.

Specification extends to
  • a digital control panel (which also operates the Whale 4kW blown-air heating)
  • 90-litre fresh (inboard) and waste (underfloor) water tanks
  • a 103-litre fridge with removable freezer compartment (80-litre in the 615 model)
  • Thetford Duplex oven and grill, Thetford three-burner hob with glass lid and sprung beech bed box tops with gas struts for easy loading.
The Bailey Advance range will make its public debut at the Manchester motorhome show (EventCity 15-18 January) and the Scottish motorhome show (SECC, 5-8 February), followed by the NEC in Birmingham (17-22 February).

The first production vehicles will arrive at Bailey dealers in April. See January's Which Motorhome for an exclusive road test of the Advance 615 or buy the January issue of MMM magazine to read all about the Advance 665.

You don’t just have to read about the new models, you can see them being expertly reviewed in this exclusive video of three of the new Bailey motorhomes. Discover what the team thought of the compact, sub-6m 615, the well-specified, value-for-money 665 and the mid-range 635.

The Approach Advance 615 is a sub-6m model that's low and slim, thanks to a narrow body width. That size makes the Advance appear better integrated with the Peugeot cab. With a minimal rear overhang and 130bhp engine, this Advance also offers loads of driver appeal.

Frugal, family fun was the opinion of the MMM road tester when faced with the new Approach Advance 665. Well kitted out with air-con, USB socket and Peugeot radio, the build quality was also very good. Throw in a drop-down bed and the Al-Ko chassis and you have great value for money.
