Survey finds drivers reluctant to invest in winter tyres

If you intend to use your motorhome over the winter, think about the tyres

Research, carried out by Falken High Performance Tyres, has revealed that UK drivers are largely unwilling to invest in a second set of tyres for the winter. With many motorhomers either heading for warmer climes, or storing their vehicle for the winter months, there is even less incentive to invest in another set of tyres that could cost over £500.

In the survey of those that didn’t invest in winter tyres, Falken found that 25 per cent of respondents claimed the cost was too high, 20 per cent believed the UK weather was too mild to warrant the expense, another 20 per cent didn’t think they needed them and a further 19 per cent thought it was too much hassle to change them.

“The results surprised us, particularly the belief that the UK climate was sufficiently mild enough not to need cold weather tyres,” said Falken’s UK director Matt Smith. “Exacta weather is predicting a very cold winter and consumers seem to have forgotten the conditions that caused travel disruption from just three or four years ago.”

One solution being offered by Falken is the use of an all-season tyre, such as the Euroall AS200. This tyre provides shorter breaking distances and precise steering response even in snow, yet come the summer will still offer significant grip when the road surface is warm. There are sizes from 15in up to 17in to suit most motorhomes.
