Wyton Lakes
THIS is a lovely rural setting with fishing on site, in any of the four lakes, plus the Great River Ouse is only a stone’s throw away. The lakes are unfenced and so the park is for adults only. The 12-acre site has 40 pitches, all have electric hook-ups and most are on hardstandings. The sanitary facilities are modern and well equipped. There are separate facilities for the disabled.

Other facilities provided include a washing-up / vegetable preparation room which has pamphlets on local places of interest and a book swap facility and also a freezer that may be used by visitors for ice blocks (no bait!). There is a pub next door that offers food, but it has a large play area for children so most adult visitors prefer the pub ¾ mile away. There is a large garden centre opposite that sells milk and newspapers and has a café, but for more extensive shopping, the village nearby has local facilities.

The park is set equidistant between Huntingdon and St Ives (3 miles), where you can hire narrow boats to explore the Great River Ouse. Huntingdon was the birthplace of Oliver Cromwell (museum well worth a visit) and is a bustling market town worthy of a day trip. The local attractions include Grafham water (15 miles), which has a 10-mile circuit for walking or cycling (cycle hire available), water sports, fishing and a nature reserve – well worth a visit.

There are several National Trust properties nearby including Wicken Fen Nature Reserve, Houghton Mill, Anglesey Abbey and Wimpole Farm. St Ives is only three miles away and has 35 restaurants and various local shops, a supermarket and amenities. St Ives is an ancient riverside town famous for the Chapel on the Bridge and holds regular large markets.

In summer, there is the St Ives Carnival and the Music Festival. Close by attractions include the Raptor Foundation, Paxton Pits Nature Reserve and Hamerton Zoo Park. A Tesco superstore is nearby at Bar Hill. Visitor highlights in Cambridge (16 miles) include the magnificent Kings College Chapel which is a must see and the various colleges of the university are open most of the year for a small entrance fee. The Tourist Information Office in Cambridge is very good and they offer regular walking tours.

There are several bus companies that run open-topped bus services around the points of interest and they allow hop-on hop-off at each stop. The Fitzwilliam Museum is enthralling, has changing displays and, best of all is free! The Duxford Imperial War Museum (25 miles) is easily accessible by car – just 30 minutes down the A14/M11 – but be aware that the area around here gets busy during the air show season.
