Goose image scoops our photo competition

A superb image of a greylag goose plunging its head into the water has been named winner of the outandaboutlive/Campsite Finder photographic competition held in conjunction with the RSPB’s Big Wild Sleepout event and sponsored by Blacks.
Readers were invited to take part in the Big Wild Sleepout, an RSPB event held across the UK in June 2014, and submit their photographs. We were looking for images that captured the essence of a night under the stars observing nature and waiting for the dawn chorus.Generous sponsorship by Blacks resulted in a prize of a complete set of camping gear worth £500. This includes a four-person tunnel tent, two sleeping bags, and cooking equipment.
The competition attracted dozens of high-quality entries, ranging from snaps taken inside tents as youngsters hunkered down for the night, to landscape images capturing the beauty of the British countryside at dawn and dusk (sunset and sunrise images were especially popular), and wildlife pictures showing extraordinary detail of insects and other beasties.
Bird images were, of course, also well represented – and it was one of these that was finally selected as our winner. Taken by Stephanie Acton, this remarkable image captures a greylag goose and the fascinating distortion of the water surface as it stretches its neck downwards.
On hearing the news, Stephanie said she was "actually shaking, I can't believe that little goose has won me such an amazing honour. I feel like I need to go and track it down and give it some treats or something for being such a good poser."
