Melrose Gibson Park Caravan Club Site, Scottish Borders

The Tweed is one of the great fly fishing rivers of the UK, and is just a quarter-of-a-mile from this Caravan Club site. which provides easy access to the river as well as the charming borders town of Melrose. Being a Club site, it has the usual high standard of facilities. The large level hardstanding pitches are well maintained and the surrounding countryside has much to offer. There are some 1,500 miles of footpaths in the surrounding Eilden Hills. A bus can be caught from outside the site to historic Edinburgh and its castle.
Wyreside Lakes, Lancashire

Built around some flooded gravel pits on the Duchy of Lancaster’s estate, Wyreside Lakes is a secluded campsite with some excellent fishing opportunities. The site has grass pitches, some of which are sloping, and facilities include a toilet and shower block with wheelchair access and baby changing room, and shop and laundry. The location offers great potential for exploring Lancashire, the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales, but be aware that the nearest bus stop is an hour’s walk away. Carp and pike are in most of these old quarry workings. One of the six lakes is also stocked with tench, chubb, perch, rudd and bream. Day tickets from £7.

A well-established coarse fishery with 141 swims over five lakes, Bullock Farm has been named one of the top fisheries in the UK by both the Angler’s Mail and the Angling Times. The lakes, including a specimen carp lake with fish as large as 27½lb, are heavily stocked and well maintained. There’s a café on site, the Lambing Shed, serving snacks and daily home-cooked specials, and newspapers, bread and milk can be ordered. It’s just 4½ miles from the M5 in the delightful village of Kingston Seymour. Fishing day tickets are £7 adults, £5 concessions, with no charge for extra rods.

Callow Top, the only campsite in its area with coarse fishing, proudly boasts of the ecological balance of its fishing lake and nature reserve. The lake is stocked with carp (crucian and mirror), perch, roach, rudd and tench, and if the quarter-mile walk from the main park facilities is too much, it even offers parking beside the lake. A nice touch is the addition of a birdwatching hide on the lake, available for campers to use at no charge. The site is well-presented and has a handy shop, a three-meals-a-day restaurant, outdoor swimming pool, and children’s play area. Fishing day tickets are charged at £5.

In the heart of the Cairngorm National Park and on the shores of Loch Morlich, this spectacular campsite is great for that real back-to-nature experience. As well as fishing, it offers watersports as well as horse riding and practically unlimited walking on 175 miles of footpaths through the rare ancient Caledonian Pinewood forest. This Camping in the Forest site has first-rate toilets and showers, and there is a bar and a small shop. Despite the remote location in the Highlands, it’s only a 15-minute drive to Aviemore for a fine selection of pubs, restaurants, and shops.

The highly-rated fishing lakes at Fields End Water, known as The Pit and The Pool, are kept stocked with carp, tench, roach, perch, barbell, chubb and orfe and are said to offer fishing for all levels. The adult-only campsite is set in the beautiful ‘big sky’ country of the Cambridgeshire Fens and promises a peaceful and tranquil retreat with excellent wildlife-spotting opportunities on a number of marked walks direct from the site. It incorporates a five-pitch Caravan Club CL for members only, plus 53 pitches for general access. This highly-rated site is a member of the exclusive Premier Parks group, so visitors can be confident of first-class facilities.

On the shores of Lough Neagh and adjacent to the Six Mile Water, this campsite offers direct access to some excellent fisheries. The Six Mile Water is a stream that’s famed for its brown trout, salmon and especially the unique local trout variant, the dollaghan. This highly-prized migratory fish is often caught in the dark using sea fishing techniques. The campsite is owned and operated by Antrim Borough Council and offers 37 hardstanding pitches with electric hook-up. Facilities are built and maintained to a high standard and include a modern toilet and shower block with wheelchair accessibility, café, a TV lounge and games room, laundry and dishwashing areas.

No fewer than eight separate fishing lakes covering 12 acres and a total of 199 pegs gives an indication of the fishing potential offered at Eye Kettleby Lakes. Among the beasts lurking in these waters is a 30lb mirror carp known locally as the Big Chief. This site is top-class, they’ll even bring a hot drink and bacon roll to you on the bank for breakfast! The campsite, which is exclusively for adults, has 59 pitches including superior pitches offering 16A hook-ups, fresh and waste water points and TV connection. Facilities are of high quality and the charming log cabin style of the buildings is sure to impress. Day fishing tickets are £5 (£4 concessions) including two rods, but campers can fish for free in autumn and winter.
