IslawrffordIslawrffordd Caravan Park, Gwynedd

Islawffordd is about three miles north of Barmouth, along the coast road, on the north side of the Mawddach estuary. Barmouth is a refined resort with a long beach, a harbour, cafés and restaurants. Steep steps and paths lead up to Old Barmouth, also known as The Rock. Islawrffordd Caravan Park has 75 fully serviced, gravelled hardstanding pitches with some super pitches. Facilities are comprehensive, with an indoor pool, a shop, a takeaway, play area, a laundry and underfloor-heated shower building. Beautiful beaches stretch both to the north and south of the park making for a perfect coastal base.

Bala Camping and Caravanning Club Site, Gwynedd

Bala is the largest natural lake in Wales, a mile-wide stretch of water almost four miles long. The scenery is breathtaking, surrounded by mountains and close to the eastern boundary of the Snowdonia National Park. Sailing, canoeing, windsurfing and fishing are all attractions to be enjoyed on Bala Lake. There are many walks and cycle routes from here, too. The Bala Lake Railway and the Ffestiniog railways are great ways to take in the stunning local scenery. The Bala Club site has both hardstanding and grass pitches, dishwashing facilities, washing machines, a parent-and-baby room and a play area.

Tyddyn Du Touring Park, Conwy

If you’re enchanted by Welsh castle history, this site is a good choice; it’s close to Conwy Castle, spectacularly built on a rock. It’s one of several in this region built for Edward I. The appeal for the visitor is the grandeur of its high towers and curtain walls, and its excellent state of preservation. From the castle’s battlements there are magnificent views over the sea and mountains. Tyddyn Du is an adults-only campsite with a quiet and peaceful atmosphere and sea views. The site has a deluxe shower building with a laundry. Pitches are gravel hardstanding, spacious and arranged on terraces so that most have views of the sea.

Tyddyn LlwynTyddyn Llwyn Camping, Caravan and Touring Park, Gwynedd

Tyddyn Llwyn is close to the harbour town of Porthmadog and the shore-side village of Borth-y-Gest; both are within walking distance. A short drive brings you to the vast beach at Black Rock Sands, which is ideal for a day at the coast. Porthmadog is a spectacular location, with the mountain of Moel-y-Gest rising 263m above the town. Tyddyn Llwyn is in a partially wooded area at the foot of the mountain. Facilities on site include a grill and bar, featuring locally brewed ales, a play area, games room, pool table and laundry. Another place that is a must-visit while staying here is the famous Italianate village of Portmeirion.

Bron Derw Touring Caravan Park, Conwy

Bron Derw is close to the market town of Llanrwst in the Conwy Valley, five miles from Betws-y-Coed and 10 miles from Llandudno. It’s an ideal base for exploring Snowdonia and the north Wales coast. Beaches, castles, gardens and railway fascination are all around you here. Bodnant Garden is a few miles away, with 80 acres in two areas and plants from many parts of the world. Betws-y-Coed is known as the gateway to Snowdonia; it’s on the edge of the Snowdonia National Park and a hub of outdoor activities. Bron Derw Touring Caravan Park has 20 multi-service pitches, washing up and laundry facilities. It’s a quiet site in a secluded and peaceful area surrounded by those rolling Welsh hills.

This site is close to Caernarfon and another of Edward I’s castles. It’s also close enough to Snowdonia to be a great choice if you’re planning a walking holiday, or exploring the mountain railway. Trains leave from Llanberis, a village at the foot of Snowdon, about 10 miles from Plas Gwyn, and climb to the summit. The journey takes an hour and the scenery is truly memorable and breathtaking. The site has 30 pitches, some hardstanding, all with hook-ups. A dishwashing area and showers are among the facilities. A regular bus service can be caught from the end of the drive with services to Caernarfon, Bangor and Llanberis.

Nant Mill Touring Park, Denbighshire

Nant Mill Touring Park, once a working farm and mill, is half-a-mile east of the resort and beach of Prestatyn. The duck pond that once fed the mill and a small stream are current-day features of the site. The campsite occupies seven acres, divided into three areas bordered by hedges. Its seaside location makes this site ideal for those who like the coast, plus it has an adventure play area and a field set aside for ball games and kite flying, should younger members of the family be in tow. Walkers will be enticed and challenged by the Offa’s Dyke Path. It starts at Prestatyn’s promenade and takes you up to the limestone hills of the Clwydian range and on, for 177 miles, south, to Chepstow.

Min-y-Don Holiday Park, Gwynedd

Not far south of the Glaslyn Estuary, Harlech Castle rises magnificently, crowning a near-vertical cliff face. The castle has two rings of walls and towers, plus an amazing 61m-long stairway that leads from the castle to the cliff base. The castle is close to Harlech beach and also close to Min-y-Don, which has a Welsh Tourist Board five-star rating. Pitches are spacious and level, with electric points, water supply and drain to every pitch. The shower building features private bathrooms and washing up facilities. From the site you can walk into Harlech where you will find restaurants and shops.

About five miles south of Wrexham lies a site with a character all of its own. The Plassey is more like a miniature inland resort, with its own retail village housed in converted farm buildings, selling crafts and enticing gifts. There’s hair and beauty studios, a delicatessen, even a restaurant, plus a nine-hole golf course, pitch ‘n’ putt and a driving range. There’s so much to entertain you at Plassey that you probably won’t want to venture away from the site. But, if you do, we’d recommend making for Llangollen Wharf, where you can journey along the Llangollen canal network on a horse-drawn barge.

Bron-Y-WendonBron-Y-Wendon Touring Park, Conwy

Bron-Y-Wendon’s main attraction is that most of its pitches have views of the sea. The site is high up on the cliffs, with 130 pitches (some are hardstanding) set out on terraces, all with hook-ups. Facilities include toilets and showers in three heated buildings. The site is immaculately kept, with flower borders and shrubs. There’s a late-arrivals area with hook-up facility. A trip into nearby Llandudno and a stroll along its grand promenade is recommended. You can also take an alpine cablecar or San Fransisco-style tramway to the summit of the Great Orme Country Park.
