Five of the best small campsites

db07dbe1-9053-4552-8b8e-5a35fd3e8f2c

Small but perfectly formed. Five lovely little sites with fewer than 25 pitches.

SOMERSET - LOWTROW CROSS

Said to be the only four-star touring park on Exmoor, Lowtrow Cross is a small and beautifully maintained site, catering for adults only. There’s lots to see and do, including Wimbleball Lake and Haddon Hill, half-an-hour’s walk away, where nature lovers may see Exmoor ponies and a wide variety of birds. The small site shop is well stocked with essentials and local specialities including the local butcher’s own-recipe sausages (recommended). The site has good free showers, laundry, freezer, microwave and free wi-fi. The site is on a bit of a slope, though, so remember to take your levelling kit. Dogs stay free of charge and are also welcome at the adjacent Lowtrow Cross Inn, a proper country pub with home-cooked food.

Upton, Taunton TA4 2DB - 01398 371199 - lowtrowcross.co.uk - Open: March – 31 October

CARMARTHENSHIRE - LLWYNIFAN FARM CARAVAN SITE

Llwynifan FarmThe hardstanding touring pitches at adults-only Llwynifan Farm are landscaped on three tiers across the hillside to make the most of the countryside views. Llwynifan Farm is a 25-pitch dog-friendly site with a dedicated exercise area and a local circular river walk. A range of added treats are available, such as a laundry and ironing service, bike hire and a range of holistic and complementary therapies. This caravan and motorhome campsite is located on the edge of Llangennech (one mile from the M4) and just 15 minutes’ drive from the lovely Carmarthen coast. There are a large number of local cycle paths, from the Millennium Coastal Park (passing through some stunning scenery) to mountain biking trails in Afan Forest a little further away.

Llangennech, Llanelli SA14 8AX - 01554 820420 - southwalescaravansite.co.uk - Open: 1 March – 27 December

CORNWALL - KILLIWERRIS TOURING PARK

KilliwerrisYou may think of Cornwall as the land of huge holiday parks catering to the family masses, but there are small oases of calm tucked away for adults to enjoy in the quieter periods. Killiwerris is one such hidden gem. Located just five miles from Truro and the coastal village of St Agnes, Killiwerris has 20 pitches and is exclusively for adults. There are 16 gravel hardstandings and all pitches have electric and fresh water connection. A network of footpaths and bridleways can be found close by, making it perfect for a walking or cycling holiday. Truro is charming with many cafés, restaurants and shops, while St Agnes offers fantastic beaches, quieter than the more popular ones of Newquay.

Penstraze, Chacewater, Truro TR4 8PF - 01872 561356 - killiwerris.co.uk - Open: All year

RUTLAND - GREENDALE FARM CARAVAN & CAMPING PARK

Rutland GreendaleWith only 12 pitches it’s easy to put Rutland Greendale’s motto – ‘Arrive as strangers, leave as friends’ – into practice. This popular adults-only, no-smoking touring park is surrounded by rolling countryside, ideal for walking, cycling and exploring the attractions of England’s smallest county. The site may be small, but there’s a heated outdoor pool for guests, along with an on-site shop and cycle hire. There is a shop and two pubs in the village. The pitches are all hardstanding with electric hook-up and located in a garden-like area. From May to September 12 pitches are available, only five for the rest of the year. Rutland is home to a huge reservoir and Lyndon and Egleton Nature Reserves, where the only breeding ospreys in central England can be seen.

Pickwell Lane, Whissendine LE15 7LB - 01664 474516 - rutlandgreendale.co.uk - Open: All year

COUNTY DONEGAL - KNOCKALLA CARAVAN & CAMPING PARK

Knockalla Caravan and CampingThe key to this site’s appeal is its location – just a short walk from Ballymastocker Beach, which was voted the second most beautiful beach in the world by Observer Magazine travel writers. The beach extends for miles and the views from the caravan park across the sands are spectacular. Knockalla offers hardstanding pitches, each with electric hook-up, room for an awning and to park a car. There are plenty of on-site facilities including toilets and showers, a fully stocked shop,
a café, laundry and free wi-fi. As well as waking up to a great view, it is also possible to wake up to the aroma of freshly baked bread, as the site has its own bakery that sells fresh bread, croissants and scones every day.

Magherawarden, Portsalon - 00353 749 159108 - knockallacaravanpark.com - Open: 14 March – 1 October
