At the heart of the Lake District, in 25 acres of unspoilt natural beauty, Park Cliffe makes the hustle and bustle of modern life nothing more than a distant memory. This award-winning park has 5 stars VisitEngland, 5 AA pennants and a Gold David Bellamy Conservation Award. It’s family friendly with an outdoor play area, and a bar and breakfast restaurant plus ‘pop-up’ street food trailers for evening meals.

As well as a great location, the campsite features a variety of touring, camping and glamping accommodation.  Children love to play outdoors at family friendly Park Cliffe which is spacious, quiet and peaceful throughout the year.

Sheep crop the turf on the steep slope of a hill that reaches high above the park.  In another direction, gentle undulating terrain stretches off into the distance as far as the eye can see. A traditional Westmorland slate dry stone wall is all that separates Park Cliffe from the natural beauty of the Lake District fells that surrounds it.

This is a spectacular place. Idyllic for its tranquillity. Breath-taking for its incredible views.

Park Cliffe’s touring and motorhome pitches are on gravel hardstanding with electric hook-ups, water fill and drain points.  Across a stream, tent pitches climb up the gentle slopes of the hillside.

This must be one of Britain’s best equipped campsites. Showering and washing arrangements are centrally heated so are warm and cosy throughout the year.  Each shower compartment has a sunken area for the actual shower, ensuring that the dressing area remains free from water.

There’s a laundry and a row of washing-up sinks under a veranda that borders a babbling stream. But there’s more: upstairs in the amenities building are a series of bathrooms. You can hire one for 45 minutes or, for £15.00 per day, you can reserve your own bathroom for your use at any time. They’re great for families with small children and even have an over-bath drying rack for clothing for home-from-home convenience.

The eating arrangements also excel. The beamed-ceiling bar-restaurant serves breakfasts with full English and vegetarian alternatives available.  The bar serves a variety of beers, wines and spirits for a variety of tastes, and a ‘pop-up’ street food trailer serves takeaway food most evenings.  (Bar, breakfast restaurant and ‘pop-up’ street food hours vary throughout the year and full details can be found on Park Cliffe’s website.)

Once installed on your pitch, meander down to the bar – and watch the sunset from one of the tables that overlook a stream. If you prefer to eat at your accommoation, the campsite’s shop provides food and wine, or grab your ‘pop-up’ street food takeaway.

Park Cliffe is four miles from Bowness, about halfway up the eastern side of Windermere. Walks and cycle routes abound, with information available at the office.

Through a gap in the dry-stone wall is an excellent adventure playground, with plenty of other places to play. Come the evening, try the pool table in the bar, or the air hockey and table tennis in the separate games room. Scrabble and other board games, as well as books and a few DVDs, are available to borrow. For families who seek more natural games, a shallow stream running along one side of the site just beckons all ages for great-fun splashy play.

There is much to appeal to wildlife watchers. On our short stay we heard woodpeckers and, had we had the luxury of a longer time to sit and watch, we’d have doubtless spotted tree creepers, nuthatches, and jays, which with roe and red deer are frequent visitors here.

In short, Park Cliffe is a fantastic park of huge appeal in some of Britain’s best scenery. An excellent base for touring the Lake District, of course – but you don’t have to leave the park to have a wonderful break here.
