New walking festival in Monmouthshire and Forest of Dean launched

5480d9db-4ec4-41fb-83a1-e04208105368

The MonDean Walking Festival starts 27 June

Monmouthshire and The Forest of Dean have teamed up to provide a new walking festival based throughout both areas, showcasing all that is best in walking here, exploring the Wye Valley and the country either side of this beautiful river.

Experienced walk leaders will take you through the picturesque, industrial, spectacular scenery between 27 June and 5 July on walks of varying lengths. Last year's festival walks visited the theme of World Wars as part of the commemoration, taking walkers to resistance sites, learning about the role of homing pigeons and other interesting facts while traversing the beautiful Monmouthshire countryside.

This year is a celebration of the new link with the Forest of Dean to create the MonDean Walking Festival. On offer will be a range of walks of differing lengths: 3/4 miles from the Fit4Life healthy walking programme; 7 miles exploring the area around Skenfrith in north Monmouthshire, walks with a pub, tea room or sampling some of the excellent local food and drink producers; heritage and industrial walks looking at the mining past of both areas and indeed the links between them, taking in tram roads along the Wye or in the Forest; a section of the Gloucestershire Way from Mayhill on the boundary of Gloucestershire to Parkend in the heart of the Forest with its tourist railway and many more. There is a wealth of beautiful and interesting material to offer walkers.

There will be no single base for the Festival but Monmouth, Abergavenny, Chepstow, Symonds Yat, St Briavels and venues around the Forest offer places to site a motorhome.

The website walkinginmonmouthshire.org will be the place to see what is on offer throughout the area 27th June - 5th July 2015. Information will be online from 5th April and bookings will be open from the end of April. There is a £5 booking fee.
